Pet Peeves

When you talk to builders, they’ll each have a list of pet peeves that make them crazy. Maybe we’re a high maintenance bunch, but I think my list may be higher than most (and I’ve toured A LOT of homes!)

These pet peeves are mine because I don’t want them to become YOURS.

Unlike so many builders, I always live in the homes I’ve built. This is the fourth Dickens Built home my family has lived in. You truly KNOW the feel of a home when you’re in it every single day. I would never put a home floor plan on the market that my family and I did not truly love to live in.

Balance & Symmetry

If your home spaces aren’t perfectly proportioned and balanced, you may not notice it at first glance. Eventually, these things pop out as pet peeves. It’s more than simply a matter of eye appeal. It’s critical to feeling a sense of balance and scale in the space and ultimately loving to live or entertain in that space.

Do you ever get the feeling something is “off” but you can’t quite put your finger on it? Chances are, the scale in your home is unbalanced, or they’re off by just the smallest amount and you’re dissatisfied.

Here are just a few typical areas that can be out of balance without meticulous attention to detail:

  • Pendant lights in the kitchen must be balanced over the island or sink.

  • Kitchen islands - the workable space between islands and base cabinets has to create a functional cooking area.

  • Granite - We avoid seam lines if at all possible! Our goal is to cut granite from one slab.

  • Faucets must be perfectly centered.

  • Lights at the front door - Lights on each side must be ¾ of the way up the door - perfect measurements, same height. You’d be surprised how often this is off! (Also, the same distance from the casing of the door.)

  • Cabinets - Cabinet design should be done with consideration to the exact appliance package you’re installing. If done after the fact, you can have gaps that create a need for fillers that throw off the balance or symmetry.

Balance is one of my highest priorities! If something isn’t balanced and in symmetry, it will eventually drive you crazy and if you’re not happy, I’m not happy. It’s as simple as that!
